Good Job

Grandmother's Cooking
When we would visit Grandmother Conover for any length of time, she would take all the kids into the kitchen, find aprons, towels, or large dishcloths and set us all up to "help" her make dinner. All of us had a chance to peel potatoes, carrots, and vegetables, or grate cheese, and carrots, whip up (with a hand egg beater) powdered milk and water, or a hundred other tasks she seem to always have in meal preparation.

Sitting down to a tasty meal, we always felt invested in the dinner and proud of our efforts to help out the family. It was not until years later that I realized how much easier dinner would have been to put on if she didn't have so much "help".

Efficiency, saving time, and perfection were not her main goals or concern. We connected, felt invested in the process, and were proud of our efforts when we sat down to dinner. We felt we had done a good job.

When working in God's kingdom (or in church callings) it would be wise to always remember that God has said, "I am able to do mine own work."* He does not require extra hands to finish His work, He just lets us in on the ride. An omniscient being could be much more efficient, competent, and qualified to do the work Himself. Instead He asks us to be of service to our fellow man*, to have compassion on others*, to love one another*, and to take care of the poor.* Not because He could not do it Himself (probably could do a MUCH better job), He wants us to be invested in one another, to love and be connected*, to have the joy of hearing Him say some day, "Well done my good and faithful servant."*
