Just Hanging around During the Day

I'm not sure why only these trees have these bats. There are down Independence Road/Liberation Road in one section on the meridian. The other trees in the neighborhood do not have bats. In fact outside of this location, the same trees do not have bats.

The story/rumor I heard was that the bats were home once to a tribe in a different place. But when the chief got ill and went to the hospital in the city, the bats all followed. The chief ended up dying and the bats have stayed there ever since. I have heard the rumor that every once in awhile they try to get rid of the bats, but they always come back.

My theory is "they" [city managers? mayor, city officials?] don't want to get rid of them unless they are too big of a nuisance because they would have chopped down the trees if they didn't want them to have a habitat there...but then where would they roost without the trees? Is it better to just leave them where they are?

They are very big for a bat, when I see them flying I think of pterodactyls as they aren't quite bird shaped but large enough to be slightly bigger than a seagull or maybe a raven, but not as big as a hawk. Totally bigger than the bats I watched in California.

Just one more fascination in this incredible country. If you are interested in the scientific study done here is the link.

If you are interested in an article about someone who is in favor of bats and why - read his adventure here.
