The Nature of Troubles

Watching different sets of friends and church members handle their COVID problems has been extremely interesting. My over-all hyperbole conclusion is that COVID for my Philippine friends is just one more issue to deal with. COVID to my American friends is devastating.

For instance, when the restrictions came out to shelter in place, do not go to church, my friends in three different Philippine wards were in zoom meetings the next week all from the 'comfort' of their homes. Our American ward didn't have services for months. The primary children's program didn't happen, though a Christmas message did. I was able to see the Philippine Cavite primary program in my messages. All the children were filmed giving their talks at home, singing their songs with their siblings at home, then someone put it all together in a video to share. The Philippine saints had to contend with a typhoon ripping off roofs and flooding while in their restricted areas. Loved ones died just as they did in the States. Life goes on with joy. But the resilience looks different. Now that they can meet in small groups, the individuals and families without priesthood bearing men go to the chapel while the others have the sacrament in their own homes. They are having all kinds of internet meetings. It was reported that the missionary work has increased during this time. Not quite what is happening with my American friends.

Of course this is an over exaggeration of whole countries and I am sure different people will have entirely different stories of hope and resilience.  It is just interesting to note that for some this is a "before and after" year and for some it is one more pothole in the road.
