Wli Falls - tallest falls in West Africa |
As we crossed over the 9th 'bridge' on the trail up, there was a 'chirping' noise and I thought there was a colony of birds nesting close. No. It was thousands, and thousands of bats.
All over the cliff side where thousands of hanging bats |
The falls were beautiful, though not like Niagara or Yosemite in the Spring |
We were warned not to wade in the water because of Schistosomiasis*. One missionary said they had waded in this pool with no bad results. Another man told about a couple who waded in and got very, very sick. None of us waded in any water. |
If you look closely you can see Elder Despain's drone taking off. He took videos of the falls and bats and missionaries looking around.
One of the guide's was asked about making the bats fly. He said it wasn't a good idea because the bats might defecate. Another guide came up a bit later and hit a plank onto another plank creating a booming sound and suddenly there were thousands of bats flying through the air.
It was an amazing sight |

Best carried my bag all the way down again, so I gave him a day's wage. I hope he gets ahead in life and makes it a good one. |
*Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by parasitic flatworms called schistosomes which are endemic in the fresh waters (streams, rivers, lakes) of Ghana and other sub-Saharan countries. The best prevention is to avoid contact with fresh water. Schistosomes do not live in ocean water.
