Evening Sights

Hippos are awesome!

As we sat for awhile and watched the hippos, I noted that the little eyes and ears that you see above the surface, do not give a hint at how big the animal underneath is. Every once in awhile a hippo would "yawn" at another hippo while rising out of the river and we would see how huge they were.
We were told the yawn is a comparison to each other of whose jaw is bigger. Evidently the biggest can give the biggest bite so the other backs down or gives space. There seemed to be several times these challenges were given during the half hour or 45 minutes we were there.

Looking so deceptively small

We ran across some hyenas resting in the warm dirt before the rains came.

As the rain thundered down we saw lots of antelope of different kinds. Thinking about the day Jeffrey said they probably just wanted to make it through the night.
