Things learned on Wednesday night

Did you know that drums come in male and female? There are usually always two drums, one is smaller and higher in tone and the other is bigger and lower in tone. Both are made of wood that has been hollowed out and usually has symbols carved around the sides. The top is usually an animal skin that has been tightened down all around.

Male and Female drums

Dumevi teaching us about the drums

I do not know the name of this instrument, I think of it as a finger drum

His thumb wore a large metal ring which he tapped with the ring on his middle finger that had a scooped spoon shape attached.

His little fingers and moving middle finger kept it all going in a steady rhythm as he watched and participated with the dancers.

This tambourine had three layers of discs that made another rhythm all of its own creation. This dance was very cool as she would beat it on her leg and hold it over her head with a shake as she danced.

The gourd held by the boy in the green shirt would shake it to a rhythm. The
gourd had a net of small beads that covered it and they would sway and make a sound on the gourd. The man in white held the gourd next to his body and would pat it to a beat. I think this man is gifted in the all the instruments and had different rhythms and beats than most of the others.

Dumevi told us about the different tribes and how they would gather and the different things they did. He explained that in one tribe the spokesman is the only one to speak to you, the chief does not. He conveys all he wants to say through the spokesman. I remembered that Wisdom made his Nativity with a spokesman and I couldn't help but think of Moses and Aaron to the Pharaoh.

He told us later how his tribe does not work in the fields on Wednesday as the fields deserve a day of rest. They do not use the river on Tuesday as the river needs a day of rest. They do not whistle after dark so the night can rest.

He told us many different cool things about life in the villages with the different tribes. Various members in the ward would remind him of different things.
